Not illustrated. 1871 Excerpt: ...as he thus strives other and more unpleasant thoughts are continually suggesting themselves;--to wit his thoughtless conduct, --his open guilt, --his careless professorship, --his actual transgressions, --and as one by one these things come up in memory before him.--And as he feels that Jordan's waves are gradually approaching him nearer, he either abandons himself to a careless indifference, which cannot but end in the loss of his soul, --or be throws himself at the feet of his Saviour and agonizingly cries out--" What shall I do to be saved?" Where stands he in the swelling of Jordan? Now, my brethren, let us take the matter to ourselves, and, by the light of what I have said, let us ask ourselves individually " How shall I stand in the swelling of Jordan?" Does the question make us quail, my brethren? Do our knees tremble, and our inclinations lead us to pass on to a more agreeable topic? It may not be, with manly boldness we must enquire of ourselves, --" How wilt thou do, my soul, in the swelling of Jordan?" When death's forewarning has smitten us down, what, in the first place, will our reflections upon the past be? Remember, my brethren, that what we are doing now, will be what we shall reflect upon then with'pleasure or with pain. Our present actions will be stings to our conscience and poisonous arrows in our veins, or they will be the food of consolation, --the subjects of our hope. If we are not cut off suddenly, which we most heartily must pray God may not be the case, --then what will be our deathbed reflections? As the Jordan's swelling waves approach us, will our blood run freezingly through our veins;--will a cold pallor strike our countenance, and an icy perspiration bedew our cheeks in prospect of the swollen river, --...
