SYNOPSIS: Throughout her life Lois Wilson has fought against convention, apathy and inequality. Born in Winnipeg in 1925, in 1965 she became one of the first women, married and with children, to receive ordination as a United Church minister. In 1980 Lois Wilson was elected moderator, making her the first woman in Canada to lead a mainstream denomination. She worked as an indefatigable campaigner for the 'social gospel', bringing the church to the wider community through innovative programs of public participation. As her awareness of the problems and inequities in her own community grew, she also began to look abroad, to build bridges between people of different faiths and between the First and the Third World. She offers passionate accounts of the heroic struggles waged against political oppression and poverty by people of South Africa, Chile, Argentina, India, South Korea, and the Soviet Union, that she has witnessed in her role as president of the World Council of Churches. Through her involvement in global issues she has met such international figures of Mother Teresa, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Leger, and Jean Vanier, but it is arguable in her descriptions of the ordinary people--many of them women--who daily risk their lives to win social justice that Wilson offers her most powerful testament to human courage and Christian commitment. More than an autobiography, Turning the World Upside Down is a memoir of conscience, faith and love--be it Wilson's love for her family, her community, her lifelong friend Margaret Laurence, or for the oppressed and outcast around the globe. Never one to shy away from controversy, she challenges us with her views on feminism, homosexual ordination, disarmament, ecumenism, and with her call for a radical restructuring of the world economy. The Christian gospel demands an active, compassionate engagement with the world. Lois Wilson opens our eyes to what that really means. Lois Wilson's resume bears out the truism that if you want to get something done, hire a busy person. At present she is president of the World council of Churches and is on the boars of such bodies as Amnesty International and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. In the past she has been moderator of the United Church of Canada, and president of the Canadian Council of Churches. Wilson is an active spokeswoman for the peace movement and a frequent speaker at international conferences. She has received the World Federalists' Peace Award, the United Nations Association Pearson Peace Prize, and the Order of Canada. She holds several honorary degrees. Born in Winnipeg, Wilson has lived in Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Kingston, and Toronto, where she resides today with her husband Roy.
