English Summary: One hundred and thirty years ago, Egyptian farmers accidentally discovered some letters addressed to Pharoh Akhenaten in the late 14th century BC. These tablets in cuneiform writing, sent by the kings of the surrounding regions, opened up an exciting glimpse into the origins of diplomacy in the ancient Near East. In line with this decisive find, numerous excavations undertaken since the end of the 19th century in Syria, Turkey, and Iraq have unearthed the incredible diversity of the alliances formed between the third and first millennia BC. Dominique Charpin's work, the continuation of his teachings at College de France, offers unprecedented insight into the issue of diplomatic relations in the ancient Near East. Initially expressed as sermons preached between kings in which gestures, as well as words, were conveyed under the aegis of the gods, alliances became genuine treatises passed on to the following generations and extended to the entire population. The alliances expansion and sustainability led to the shift from a personal commitment to a written medium binding an entire community. Alliances as fascinating examples of the way in which law and religion were intertwined in the ancient Near East are essential in order to understand the birth of the State, or even the manner in which biblical authors conceived of the alliance between God and His people.
