David Gemmell's Troy trilogy is a great read for lovers of historical fiction. His re-telling of the Trojan War does depart from the Illiad in some fairly significant details, but it is a satisfying tale told by a masterful storyteller.
The characters are vividly portrayed with excellent development. With few exceptions the characters have realistic complexity and humanity. Even Hektor, the great tragic hero, has his human failings.
Gemmell's prose sometimes boarders on poetry as he protrays the same event through the eyes of different characters. He shows how prophecy can be self fulfilling if it is believed by the mortals under under its power.
Overall this trilogy deserves a prominent place in the library of great historical fiction.
