A Legend without the Myth
I first read this book back in the sixties and realised that it is in fact the story of Hiawatha and Minehaha, the Iroquoi legend immortalised in poetry by Longfellow as the "Song of Hiawatha".
In this book there is no myth, no legend . All legends have a base of truth or history that has been embroidered and added to over centuries. This novel has stripped away the embroideries and replaced the magic with reality. It is violent, but that is to be expected for the time long before Europeans found the continent, and yet peace prevails. Remember Longfellow's epic poem.
I was enchanted when I first read it, was still enchanted on reading it a second time. Having purchased another copy I intend to read it all again.
