Maybe you, like me, have seen a thousand Hollywood remakes and spin-offs of this story. But maybe you've never read the original. I couldn't believe how readable this book was. The plot has plenty of twists if you don't know the tale. And if you are familiar with it, the telling is enjoyable. It's even more amazing to read this book in light of the time it was written. It was a pioneer. Everything you think you know about pirates was made popular by Robert Louis Stevenson. There are a few chapters near the end where the sailing terms are a bit heavy. Pick up an annotated edition if you're interested, but those of us who are land lubbers can still follow the storyline without knowing exactly what part of the ship we're reading about. If you've been looking for good YA books for boys, look no further. This classic is a treasure.
