An important mid-nineteenth century account of British North America by the well-known German author and traveller. The work is a very complete survey of the Canadas with rather more about French-Canadian life than found in most European books of the period. The American travels comprise only a small part of the two volumes. "A vital and detached account" (Story. p106.). The author toured Canada and the States in 1855, the acounts include chapters on Montreal, the Catholic Institute, Quebec, the Indians of St. Lorette, the Quebec Seminary, Ottawa, Toronto, Lake Simcoe, the Niagara Peninsula, emigration, railway communications in Canada, &c. "Kohl writes as linguist, folklorist and social observer. He notes 1 German settler in Trois-Rivieres, 50 in Quebec, 100 in Montreal (mostly German Jews). On a St. Lawrence steamer he counted 193 German emigrants, 32 Swedes, 30 Dutchmen and 40 Britons. Blacks, much in evidence in the 1850s, appeared superior to Indians in "vital temperament". He wrote several books and his well know Kitchi-Gami. Wanderings round Lake Superior. (London. Chapman & Hall. 1960), wherein Kohl carefully collected and recorded Indian legends and traditions".
