Since the 19th century and the arrival of mass travel, the need for transport architecture has spawned some of the most impressive secular structures of recent times. This book explores the close relationship between engineering and architecture, and is produced in association with Arup. The author's introduction traces the historical background of transport around the world, and the engineering, architectural and planning responses that have attempted to meet its changing demands. The book is then divided into thematic chapters within which the author presents a selection of detailed case studies to illustrate each theme. Those featured include the OOresund Bridge, Chek Lap Kok Airport and Airport Railway in Hong Kong, and the new and refurbished stations for Wuppertal's century-old Hanging Railway in Germany. The architectural practices include Foster & Partners, Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners and Jaspert & Steffens.
