Ater, being a necessary of life, there is er aps less to be urged against the supply being in the band's of local authorities than in the case of gas, but with the latter I can see no more, and perba even see, reason for gas being so sup lied than there woul be for similar authorities to acquire rai ways, or indeed to undertake the exclusive supply of bread or meat. It is true that the latter necessaries are open to com tition, but they are unrestricted as to the amount of pro t which may be realised b their sale, and it seems to me that the public might be more enefited by being able to obtain bread and meat at low prices than b doubtful reductions on the cost of gas from its being suppli by local authorities.
