Perchance they may have been told in their infancy that their forefathers drew the sword in support of a particular creed: --it becomes necessary for them to advocate the same cause. Perchance they may entertain a high idea of their own critical and intellectual powers: --they then act the part of the intoxicated sailor, who threw away his helm as useless--they can navigate their vessel for sooth without such useless appendages. Such are a few of the most common springs of action, by which people consent to their own utter delusion. We sincerely trust, however, that we shall be able to show thai a surer and a safer guide than any of these exists--a guide which, although it may not, in a mathematical sense, be termed infallible, is nevertheless so much more likely to be safe than any other, that we think no sober-minded man can hesitate to accept it. We shall now direct the attention of the reader to that guide, more particularly as it relates to the question of Church Government. The original constitution of the Christian Church, as organized by the Apostles, is a matter of history, in the common sense of that term. Such being the case, and comprehending, as the Church did, both pastors and people, who were brought into daily contact with each other, in the most important services of religion, it would be a most extraordinary instance of scepticism on our part, if we refused the united testimony of the Primitive Church upon this subject as our guide. We are not here pleading for the reception of this Bishop's or that Bishop's speculative opinions on matters of mysterious import. It is not even necessary for us to maintain that the persons, whose evidence we have referred to were persons of a very acute and phi.
