Useful book
I wanted to review this book because I?ve found it so helpful. If you have seafaring ancestors, as I do, it is so difficult to know how to start. There?s lots of information but in many ways that?s the problem: where do you begin? This book breaks it all down into chunks: are you looking for a crewman, a captain, a ship...? The book's organised so you don?t waste time looking at things that won?t help you ? and I?ve done plenty of that in my time. (If you've done any family history research before, you'll probably know what I mean.) It?s also good at showing you what you can get online and so has saved me trips to archives by showing me online alternatives. Saved me a few rail fares. One of the case studies in it so closely resembles a problem that?s been bugging me for years, and thanks to this book I have an answer at last! I?ve dug out an extra ancestor I didn?t know I had as well which has been really interesting because he died in a shipwreck. The book?s easy to read, concise, jargon-free, and has a proper index.
