This book was a great read. I liked how it explained the often murky structure of the KGB and then gave a story narative that held interest and even concern for the lives of the author and his family. The book goes to great lengths to describe the culture in Russia under the life of the KGB. As a westerner one chafes at the loss of personal freedom and the ugliness of a system that ruined so many lives and made daily life anything but worth living. The KGB may have gone away with the revolution of the 1990's, but the culture of intimidation, coersion, and brute force at still alive and you really get a good sense of them as you read this book.
