Excerpt: ... that wonderful machine, to whose powers, as a manufacturing country, we are in no small degree indebted for our present opulence and commercial superiority. In the spring of the year there is a general stoppage along the whole line of the canal, for the purpose of cleansing the bottom; at this, time the stream is drained into its reservoirs and other channels: and in one week the Herculian task of removing myriads of filth, mud, and rubbish, from its bottom, is accomplished, through a distance of nearly an hundred miles. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. As we have entered this county by the village of Marsworth, it may not be amiss to give some little account of its history, agriculture, and rivers. The whole of Buckinghamshire, at the time of the Roman invasion, appears to have been in possession of the Catticuchlani; there is reason to believe that its western parts had, at no very distant period, been peopled by the Ancalites, whose name is apparently derived from the Uchelitwys, or the inhabitants of high grounds; thus called from their relative situation to the Taveini, the appellation of the tribe residing in the low grounds near the rivers Thame and Thames. Camden was of opinion, that the inhabitants of this county were the ancient Cassii; which is very probable, not only because there are some plain remains of the name in Casho hundred, and Cashiobury, in Hertfordshire, but in their King.Casibelin or Cassivelaun, whose name implies the King of the Cassii. They were a warlike people, and had made such proof of their courage in conquering part of the county of Dobuni, their neighbours on the west, that when Csesar lauded, the Britons unanimously chose Cassibelin their king, to be their generalissimo against the Romans, whom he so manfully.
