The Toulouse-Lautrecs were a close-knit, aristocratic family, and Henri's parents were first cousins. Intermarriage, not incompetent doctors, caused his deformity; and a childhood spent in ceaseless, aimless peregrinations around the family houses, with his wildly eccentric father more absent than not, created a smothering bond between his mother, a manipulative and neurotically pious woman, and her only surviving child. A detailed bioography
Ms. Frey has written a highly detailed, fully documented , but pleasantly readable biography of the great artist, Toulouse Lautrec. The book is lively and complete. It dispells many myths that have grown from novels and films. Ms Frey presents an honest appraisal of the artist's personal and professional life, as well as a colorful portrayal of his haunts and his times. There is little speculation here: the author documents every anecdote in the subject's life.
