Touchdown: Favorite College Fight Songs features the Florida State Seminoles marching band playing a 33-part medley of college fight songs. It is an interesting idea, but one that seems doomed to failure unless there are more fans of fight songs out there than one would suppose. Probably the main reason someone would want to hear a disc of fight songs is to have a good version of their school's song to blast out of the fraternity house window the morning of the big game or to play on a loop during their tailgate party. All you get here is a small chunk of your song played by a band with no emotional stake in the proceedings whatsoever. Artistically it is no great triumph either as the songs often clash and the juxtapositions often seem random although the pairing of the University of Michigan's "Victors" next to the imaginatively titled "Michigan State University Fight Song" is nothing less than brilliant. Apart from that one breathtaking moment, the rest of the record is a blatant attempt to cash in on the marching band craze that rings quite hollow in this reviewer's ears and heart. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
