This is the sequel to CONFESSIONS OF AN ONLY CHILD. I hope you've read that first...
TOMBOY picks up about 7 months after CONFESSIONS ended. Now Antonia "Toe" Henderson is in the fifth grade, her mother has graduated from law school and gotten a job and her father, laid off from his "outside" job, has settled into the role of househusband and hands-on dad of 10-month-old Brendan. Antonia has her own key to the family's apartment for the first time, and has partly realized a dream she had in CONFESSIONS: to be a dog-walker. Right now she has 2 clients, including her elderly neighbor Mrs. Shorr.
Now that Toe is getting used to being a big sister, it seems like Everything Else starts happening at once. Her best friend Libby has decided that they can't be best friends anymore. Why not? (Hint: the publication date is 1978. Wow! 30 years!) Libby and 2 other girls have started The Tomboy Club and Libby has decided that Toe isn't enough of a tomboy.(She couldn't still be holding a grudge from her 10th birthday--10 months ago--could she?) What if Libby should find out that Toe has recently become an "early bloomer" (you know, on her way to becoming a woman)? It seems like Toe gets along better with Jimmy Sherrill. (Wait 'til you see how much better!)
Other things are happening. Libby's "baby" sister Mattie is growing up; Mrs. Shorr and Elvira, Toe's mother's dog, are getting geriatric and sick. Toe's teacher invites her students' FATHERS to come to school and talk about their careers. Readers of CONFESSIONS have graduated--TOMBOY is a "number-chapter" (instead of having chapters with names, as CONFESSIONS had) book without illustrations.
Overall, Toe becomes disenchanted with her double-digit status. Can she just get on with living and let time change her mind? Readers who met her in CONFESSIONS and maybe have similar things going on in their lives will enjoy a second visit. Look for the possible reference to Steinbeck's THE GRAPES OF WRATH....
