At that time, it provided him with his biggest album to date, so 11 years later, the two paired up again although the balance was very different.O'Donnell was indeed on a run of success he could only have dreamed of back in 1996, his previous album Until the Next Time had been his ninth Top Ten album since 1998 and seventh in the 21st century, and although he was never going to break out from his natural fan base, it was quite large enough to virtually guarantee success every time he released an album. That natural fan base was made up of grandmothers and great-grandmothers and those who appreciated a good tune, nicely sung by a young man (he was 45 at the time of this release) without a hint of aggression or innovation, but honest, basic, pleasant vocals with background music that defined the very essence of MOR and easy listening. Mary Duff on the other hand, had enjoyed a mere handful of hit albums, the previously mentioned duets Timeless and an album entitled The Ultimate Collection in 2005 which was sensibly not called "Greatest Hits" (as she hadn't had any). The collaboration Together Again easily sailed into the Top Ten (O'Donnell's tenth) and was a mixture of covers ranging from 60-year-old oldies "My Happiness," "Hey Good Lookin," and "Harbour Lights" to 30-year-old oldies, "Top of the World," "You're My Best Friend," and "The Carnival Is Over" (well OK, that song was 42 at the time). Most of the originals had more than a hint of a flavor of country & western about them, complete with slide guitar, including the songs "Do You Think You Could Love Me Again," "Till a Tear Becomes a Ros,e" and "I Don't Care." "Daddy Was an Old Time Preacherman" was an unashamed gospel singalong and the album closed with a live version of one of the all-time slushy romantic duets, "Save Your Love," originally a number one Christmas single for Renee & Renato in 1982. ~ Sharon Mawer, Rovi
