Esther Hart was one of the passengers on the maiden voyage of the ill-fated Titanic which left Southampton for New York on 10 April 1912. Every night, she would sit up in her cabin, fully dressed, as she had this premonition that 'something dreadful' was going to happen (she slept during the day). At around midnight on 14 April something did happen - the Titanic hit an iceberg. This is an an absorbing account of what happened on and to the Titanic before it went down in the early hours of 15 April, taking more than 1500 people with her. There were 2224 passengers and crew on the ship.
Jonathan Mayo, the author, who has has also written 'minute-by-minute' books on the assassination of J F Kennedy, and Hitler's last day, tells the story of the Titanic disaster in straightforward language everyone can understand, using the present tense, which, in my view, makes the narrative that much more appealing. Titanic followers should find this book riveting and will no doubt learn more about what happened on that fateful night, no matter how many other works they have read on the subject.
Esther Hart and her daughter survived, her husbanfd did not.
