Forty years ago I read Tistou of the Green Thumbs in sixth grade. I just happened to pull it off my classroom library's shelf and ended up reading a story that was ahead of it's time because it is about ecology, self-esteem and solving conflict. Tistou is a boy who lives with his parents in France. His companions are a pony and his family's gardener. Tistou has magical thumbs that cause anything that comes in contact with them to sprout beautiful flowers and plants. Tistou is chided for spending his time making things beautiful and green, but he remains true to himself, teaching a lesson to criminals in the French prison and two opposing armies at war. Tistou of the Green Thumbs went out of print, but I did buy a used copy and reread it when I was in my late 40's. I found that the story still had the mystique and charm of being about a French child, it had a storyline that is relevant to issues that children and the rest of our planet is facing today, and the special surprise ending that makes reading the story a magical delight.
