Sometimes it's better just to tell a story, instead of writing it fancy in a way that might have impressed your creative writing teacher. That applies to Grant Michaels mystery novels. I keep reading them, they entertain me for a while because they are clever, but then the artifice of them palls, and they have a way of slipping into my recycle bin. Clever they are, but you can put them down at any point, and probably should.
