I bought this CD for Jonn Serrie ("The Holly and the Ivy") and to hear Iman do some Christmas pieces (had only heard him on simply New Age pieces previously), but no big surprise; this CD is full of other beautiful pieces. Many of them have very unique arrangements that defy description (unless you're a musician; I'm not). "What Child is This?" incorporates strains from "Carol of the Bells" (one of my most favorite hymns) ala Jim Brickman, while "Campanilleros," which I'd never heard before, dances along in a decidedly Hispanic air (Iman). "Christmas Lullaby," I warn you, will send you off to sleep (regardless of your age) while visions of sugar plums .... well you get the idea. Father Manuel Iman collaborates with his daughter Lucia in a very beautiful version of "Little Drummer Boy." Nigel Holton in the liner notes calls "Coventry Carol" "one of my favorites" and this version is incredibly spiritual (and that's saying something). Don't mistake Geoff Bridgford's "Happy Christmas" for the John Lennon song. This one is definitely "like a prayer" (liner notes) which is appropriate for all the year. Ron Clearfield's version of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" definitely evokes the Gregorian flavor more than other versions I've heard. "We Three Kings" as interpreted by Eduardo Del Signore and Manuel Iman has more of a Hispanic air than other versions I've heard (no big surprise). I've loved the British Empire's Christmas music since forever, but the more I hear from the Hispanic people the more I think it's time for them to be acknowledged (look out British Empire! Here comes the Spanish Invasion!) as great in their own right. The singers Daya Rawat, Kim O'Leary, and Donna Holton sing as if they were angels from Heaven. I'd like to especially recommend the liner notes written by the actual musicians; lots of wonderful information about each piece. Tidings of Joy to all!
