Author Tsao Yu, pen-name of Wan Chia-poo, was born 1910 in Chienchiang County, province of Hupeh, educated at Nankai Secondary School in Tienstin & Tsinghua University in Peking; acted, directed & wrote plays incl Thunderstorm in 1933 as an undergrad. He was awarded a fellowship in 1945 and came to the U.S. He returned to Shanghai a year later as a script-writer & film director at Wenhua Studios.
