Account of the 1897-99 Belgian Antarctic Exoedition in the Belgica, a 3 masted steam/sailing ship formerly the whaler Patria sponsored by the Belgian government. Frederick Cook joined the expedition at Rio. The ship made 20 separate landings on the the islands off the Antarctic Peninsula and became the first scientific vessel to visit the continent itself. After crossing the Antarctic circle the Belgica became trapped in the pack ice and drifted for a year before being able to cut their way out. The expedition coasted Graham Land, discovered the Belgica Strait and Amundsen became the first person to ski in Antarctica.
