Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... stride of arab horses 321 body approaches the ground, by reason of the greater extension. It is marvellous what an amount of ground a horse can cover in his stride, and I have read in a very authentic work on Arab horses that, considering the size of such horses, their stride is well-nigh incredible. They appear to possess the power of throwing their hind-legs forward in advance of their fore-legs to a very peculiar extent. The writer made many experiments with horses of high caste and well-known speed. It is an old saying that 'a horse which is a good walker is equally good in all his paces, ' and such may be the case; but a sharp, quick walker is by no means always an equally fast galloper--indeed, I may go further, and assert that he is generally not so.
