Through Darkest America and Dawn's Uncertain Light are extremely literate, naturalistic, and often dark novels burrowing through a then-future America (post holocaust) in which a slow civil war of barbaric behavior by uneducated, ineducable rubes is waged against those hoping to carry on shreds of humane existence. To say Neal Barrett was prescient is an understatement. The depth and literary value should have made these books, from a mainstream or even a larger SF publisher, staples of high school Advanced Placement classes and university undergrad classes. This makes The Postman by David Brin seem like a children's book (although it's not). If a publisher were to bring them back into print, marketing to libraties and schools should be a priority. There is even a scene of a family floating down the Mississippi, watching for danger on shore--a masterful literary stroke that never lets up in Through Darkest America.
