Scobie. 424pp. Photographic illustrations from early drawings and lithographs, facsimile of the original journal, etc. Appendix and index. A very fine copy with pictorial dust jacket. Perkins arrived in California in 1849, went to the southern gold fields near Sonora & worked as a miner, later becoming a storekeeper and merchant. A lively account of life in Sonora. "Perkins originally wrote this manuscript around 1862 after moving to Argentina...in 1937 a Spanish translation was published in Buenos Aires with a reduced text...For this new edition, Morgan and Scobie made a fresh transcription of the original English manuscript, filled in missing pages by translating the Spanish version back into English, and added three of Perkins' Sonora letters" (Kurutz).
