Dead Cert, published in 1962, tells the story of Alan York, young steeplechase jockey, son of a wealthy Rhodesian entrepreneur, who finds himself embroiled in the shocking racing death of his best friend. He's a close second in the race, and flashes by seconds after his friend takes a terrible fall--was that wire that he saw lying across the track? By the time he reports it, and gets back with a witness, his friend is dead from his injuries, and the wire is gone. In typical Francis fashion, though, he doesn't give up until the evildoer is found, risking the loss of his new-found love, not to mention his life, in the process.
Nerve, published 1965, features another untypical racing hero in Rob Finn. Son of famous classical musicians, he lacks the gift of musicality, and has spent his young years roaming the globe, honing his riding skills. Finally, his care-for-nothing riding style gets him noticed by a top trainer, and also, unfortunately, by someone with a hatred for jockeys. His nerve, which has propelled him towards the top of his profession, is almost broken--until he realizes that his mounts have been systematically drugged, and by someone at whom it's almost impossible to point the finger of guilt.
Odds Against, 1969, is the first of several Sid Halley stories. The former champion jockey is out of the game, after his left hand is mauled in a racing accident. His wife has left him, and his job at the Radnor Detective Agency seems to consist of little more than hanging around the office in case his racing knowledge is required for someone else to go out and make a case. Then, one night as he stakes out the darkened office, waiting for a possible break-in, the panic-stricken suspect turns out to have a gun, and Sid is gut-shot, almost killed. When he finally recovers, it is with the realization that he is actually interested in finding out who almost did him in, which ties into a seemingly unrelated investigation that his father-in-law has pointed him toward, Sid ultimately loses his injured limb, climbs out of his despondancy, and finds a new calling.
