Haji Ali, Korphe Village Chief, Karakoram mountains, Pakistan In 1993, after a terrifying and disastrous attempt to climb K2, a mountaineer called Greg Mortenson drifted, cold and dehydrated, into an impoverished Pakistan village in the Karakoram Mountains. Moved by the inhabitants' kindness, he promised to return and build a school. Three Cups of Tea is the story of that promise and its extraordinary outcome. Over the next decade Mortenson built not just one but fifty-five schools - especially for girls - in remote villages across the forbidding and breathtaking landscape of Pakistan and Afghanistan, just as the Taliban rose to power. His story is at once a riveting adventure and a testament to the power of the humanitarian spirit.

Anti-terrorist
I have just finished reading this book about a very remarkable man. He is a man that follows through on the promises he makes, something that has gained him much respect in Pakistan and Afghanistan among the common people. In focusing on education, especially education for girls, he is doing more to defeat terrorism in the long term than the military with all its weaponry. Assuming all the incidents are true, serendipitous events occurred in Greg Mortenson's life that propelled him on his way. Whether what he has done and is doing is fate--pre-ordained or the result of fortuitous circumstance depends upon your belief system. I whole-heartedly recommend this book and am looking forward to his next book: Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, by Greg Mortenson to be released on December 1, 2009.
