All this time his eyes are looking to the Lord, watching for the first signs of acceptance, and longing to hear within him the assuring voice of the Spirit, "Be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee," How long this waiting shall be is determined by the wisdom and sovereign grace of God, who would have the vessel of the heart thoroughly emptied of sin and self before He fills it with the joy of His presence. Some reader of these pages may have been long waiting for the Lord to give him peace, and may seem to have been waiting in vain. I would say to such, take courage, renew your waiting, wait on in humble hope, pleading the Name of Jesus, and the gift of the Holy Spirit shall in God's time seal to you the blessing of salvation, and. fill you with the perfect peace which passeth all understanding. Again: The earnest believer must wait for the Lord to give him spiritual strength from day to day. Our prayers must be a close wrestling with the Angel of the Covenant, and a determined importunity at the throne of grace. We must not only wait upon the Lord, but wait for Him, resolving not to cease supplicating until the desire of our heart is granted, and the strength we need is given. Such importunity is always rewarded. While men pray thus the Lord hears them, and filleth the hungry soul with His blessing. Our spiritual strength will be proportioned to the strength and fervour and determination of our prayers. Every victory over unbelief and sin is gained first in holy prayer.
