Anne Rice's self-pitying vampires can't begin to compare with Ysidro, this book's exciting vampire! I fell desperately in love with him, but then ended up falling equally in love with the professor he coerces into helping him find out who's killing vampires in Victorian London. What can I say in my defense? Barbara Hambly's men have always been just my type. I loved the feel of the book; dark without being depressing and suspenseful without being full of the normal cliches. The love story between the professor and his wife is so enthralling, I would read the book for that alone. But the added mix of dangerous vampires (and something worse even they can't handle!) and Ysidro, the sexy Spanish vampire who "hires" the professor makes for a story that you can't put down until the last page, and even then you'll want to know more. Fortunately, Barbara wrote a sequel called "Walking with the Dead." Also excellent.
