Thomas Hardy, as The Trumpet-Major and several poems and short stories show, was earlyattracted by the "vast international tragedy" of Napoleon; and it occurred to him that there was room for some large imaginative treatment of the theme, which should at last give England her proper part in that hurly-burly.1 The notion shaped itself into an immense spectacular poem, or "panoramic show," dramatic in style, epic in progress and proportion. There was to be no great attempt at a close continuous linkage of the action; the scenes would present the most notable specimens of those thronging events which make the ten-year period chosen one of the prodigies of history; and common knowledge would supply a sufficient nexus for the whole. It would be, in fact, a chronicle play on a very 1 See the Preface to The Dynasts. large scale, taking its unity simply from the actual logic of historical events. That this was the originating intention of The Dynasts seems pretty clear from the author's preface. But in order, no doubt, to give an epic breadth to the action, a set of phantom intelligences, "impersonated abstractions," was invented to hover above the human business. Though these persons sometimes interfere in the action, thus taking the place of the regular supernatural machinery in epic processes, their main function from the beginning was apparently to utter supernal comment, which would summarize and intensify the affairs presented.
