Frederic Dumas relates how he became involved in under water archeology. In the early days of scuba diving, finding a wreck meant lots of bounty. The excavation for example of an old merchant vessel laden with amphoras was a mix between raising as many of those unbroken to use as gifts or trade and trying to map and describe the wreck site.
Fun to read about the problems they need to solve and the methods used in raising artifacts from the bottom of the (mediterranean) sea.
