Vox humana The St. Saviour's organ and the old organ of Loosemore, built for Exeter Cathedral, in 1665, were the only instruments in England possessing double metal diapasons, until a very recent period. In 1818, Mr. Davis extended the compass of the swell to tenor C, and completed the compass of the great and choir organs to GG. He put in, also, an octave of pedal pipes (wood), from GGG to GG, with an octave and a half of pedal keys, and a new action to the swell. Mr. Bishop subsequently removed the vox humana for a cremona, and a five-ranked cornet for a claribella; placing a new twelfth and fifteenth, instead of the old ones, and a pedal octave coupler. In 1841, the organ was removed to its present position in the newly built portion of the edifice, occupying the site of the former nave, and was then entirely rebuilt by Mr. Bishop. The swell was then extended to gamut G, with a new swell box, Venetian M shades, &c. Two new horizontal hellows (one for pedals alone) with double feeders, and an additional half octave of pedal pipes, descending to CCC, were added. At this time, the magnificent old case was superseded hy the present, designed and provided by the architect of the building. The largest pipes of the metal diapason are now inside. Organist, Mrs. Esther Elizabeth Cope. St. John's, Southwark. This organ was built by Cranz, and rebuilt by Hancock in 1770, and enlarged by J. Walker in 1844. Organist, Mr. William Bay ley.
