Near Very Good in Poor jacket. Large 8vo. xv, 317pp, coloured frontis and coloured plate of the Victoria Cross and the George Cross, b/w portraits of recipients, maps and sketch maps, appendices, index to Australian V.C. and G.C. winners, pictorial end-papers. Title page foxed. Decorative cloth boards, gilt, in worn dust-jacket which has two tears (one 6 cm, one 2 cm) from the upper edge and the loss of a triangular section from the lower edge of its front panel. The book contains accounts of the military careers of the Australian holders of the Victoria Cross and the George Cross and histories of the two decorations. The connecting narrative is a history of Australian participation in the South African War and the two World Wars, and points to the influence of those wars upon the Australian defence system.
