Excerpt from Theory of the Winds The theory OF the winds has been so long considered as established, that it is with some hesitation I venture to question it; especially after it has been adopted by many very distinguished men of science. Yet, however presumptuous it may appear, I cannot persuade myself that the received theory is either satisfactory in whole or in part. It will be my endeavour, in this chapter, to exhibit the causes and effects, and to explain them more in accordance with the facts accumulated by observation.
