The slit / in the stock acts as a support to the graft and should be made as near the top as possible, as, if made lower down, it would tend to interrupt the flow of sap." "It now remains to prevent air and sun from reaching the cuts. Take a little clay and rub it well round, making a large ball, and then press firmly so as to make it taper to the top and bottom in the shape of an egg as shown in D. By dipping the hand in the ashes and remoulding the ball a nice finish can be given." 2. Saddle-grafting. (Fig. 2.) "Success in this method depends on the stock and scion being of more or less equal thickness. The stock a.is cut into a wedge, sloping on both sides to c, and the scion b is slit up the middle and enough wood shaved off to make it fit exactly.
