The idea that the past is a plaything of the present, or a metafiction, is only now beginning to disturb the tranquility of professional historians, but for some 20 years it has been a commonplace of epistemological criticism, and a mainspring of experimental work in literature and the arts. Thus, in magical realism or modern Gothic the fairy tale can appear as the latest thing; while in the visual arts, futurist installations offer themselves as parodies of Old Masters.

Seller's Description:
Very good. The format is approximately 6 inches by 9.25 inches. xiv, 479, [3] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Index. In this widely acclaimed book, Raphael Samuel takes issue with the claim that our obsession with heritage is a symptom of national decay. He argues rather that we live in an expanding historical culture, one which is newly alert to the evidence of the visual and which is altogether more pluralist than earlier versions of the national past. Raphael Elkan Samuel (26 December 1934-9 December 1996) was a British Marxist historian, described by Stuart Hall as "one of the most outstanding, original intellectuals of his generation". He was professor of history at the University of East London at the time of his death and also taught at Ruskin College from 1962 until his death. He founded the History Workshop movement at trade union connected Ruskin College, Oxford. Samuel and the History Workshop movement powerfully influenced the development of the approach to historical research and writing commonly called "history from below". When Theatres of Memory was first published in 1994, it transformed the debate about what is to be considered history and questioned the role of "heritage" that lies at the heart of every Western nation's obsession with the past. Today, in the age of Downton Abbey and Mad Men, we are once again conjuring historical fictions to make sense of our everyday lives. In this remarkable book, Samuel looks at the many different ways we use the "unofficial knowledge" of the past. Considering such varied areas as the fashion for "retrofitting, " the rise of family history, the joys of collecting old photographs, the allure of reenactment societies and televised adaptations of Dickens, Samuel transforms our understanding of the uses of history. He shows us that history is a living practice, something constantly being reassessed in the world around us.
