Written in the 1950s, it is the work of a man who has "been there, done that". It is the absoluely best description of the workings of a sailing ship you can find. The depth of explanations is remarkable, and written so a person with limited knowledge of the ships can really understand and learn. In addition, he describes the work of the crew, and the training they may or may not get. A thoroughly enjoyable book, worth re-reading, and having as a reference for ship model builders. The illustrations are outstanding.
