It wasn't because any major personality involved on the British side was incompetent, although Mackesy comes closer to such a view than O'Shaughnessy ("The Men Who Lost America," 2013) who doesn't think that at all. Very fine, thorough study of what happened and why, and how the outcome was affected by important contests elsewhere in the world in which the Brits were involved, especially in the Caribbean. Important book . Need to buy this one, not borrow it from the library.

Important Work
Although too often the history of the American Revolution is told almost exclusively from the Patriot/Rebel side, the British story is worthy of consideration as well. If this interests you, this is a great place to start. More recent books go into the numerous nuances of the story but this work by a distinguished British historian is an excellent introduction.
