I could have no better chance. No salary to speak of; but it will be a great opportunity for getting practice and experience and becoming known. After the first three or four years, if he has a good start, a surgeon's practice increases rapidly. I feel confident of succeeding. In the first place I feel I'm competent; in the second place, I have the advantage of a good start. But the success of the professional man isn't measured in money, as is the success of the business man. It lies first in his capacity for service, and in that he gets his chief recognition and reward. The fees a doctor receives may be large, but there are few doctors who become capitalists. I have no ambition to be one of these exceptions; I want to be a good and busy surgeon, and I want to make--and I feel sure that I can make--a good living for you--if you will let me."
