Previous owner's bookplate on front paste-down; toning to front endpapers where newspaper clippings had been laid in, else interior is clean and unmarked. Dust jacket has some light chipping and a few small closed tears; not price clipped ($3.50); in a clear archival sleeve. 222 pages. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. Laid-in are two newspaper articles from May 1950 about the author and Mont Hawthorne (each with pictures of the two). Written by his niece, this is the biographical story of Montillius "Mont" Hawthorne (1865-1952), as told in the first person, . It begins in 1883 with his arrival in Astoria, Oregon, and describes his life and work during the 1880s in the canneries and on Columbia River ships. The greater portion of the book covers his travels and adventures in Alaska and the Yukon, beginning in 1889. Whether working for salmon fisheries or hunting for gold, Mon't story is lively and full of a wealth of historic detail.
