The ten chapters unravel an exciting story of merchant adventure, of how wealth and influence were accumulated in the early days of trading, and of the special relationship with China and her people which has been forged over many years. They explain how the company faced the challenge of the last years of the 19th century by diversifying into the construction of railways in China, into other industrial activities, and how, after the postwar period, the firm went public in 1961. This, in turn, led to further territorial diversification and to the successes of the following two decades. Throughout the book, which contains over 240 colour and black and white illustrations, are short vignettes, designed to reflect on the life and times of the many remarkable characters whose paths have crossed that of Jardine, Matheson.
