Evelyn Waugh was disgusted with society. This trilogy describes 3 big let-downs and many minor ones in the life of a soldier trying to be a saint during World War II. We are led to sympathize with the hero, and to rejoice in his private happy but disillusioned ending. We are also led to be aware of human sinfulness, with some sympathy for the sinners but without approval of their sins. The story is told well and with good humor - and, as in real life, there are many funny parts. Throughout we want to know what is to happen next. We learn about English Catholic society, the British Army good and bad, and man's general forgetfulness of purpose. This is Waugh's best book - which is saying a lot - and possibly the best book about WW II. Despite the theme, we see glimmers of hope for the future.
