I was a little disappointed at first since upon a first glance the book seemed a little basic. When I actually got down to reading the text it had a wealth of information. Not a lot of charts and tables and the photographs tend to be at the back so it involves a lot of flipping back and forth. But the nuggets are there if you actually spend the time to read. Would I pay $200 or more? No. But in the $35 and under range it is a good buy.

A Classic
As all classics this book can stand the test of time. After 35 years his thorough analysis and sharp focus on revelevant issues to the handling, usage and design of gun stocks remains current and surprinsingly useful. Some complex subjects as, balance and recoil, shotgun ballistics and barrel regulation, all conductive to effective wingshooting, are well addressed and properly supported by useful data. Stock design and fitting are the central chapters of this book´s purpose. They are straighforward, to the point and instructive. Robert Arthur takes us from the basic tenants of the stock parts, to the practical issues of gun control and accuracy to the secrets of stock design and wood selection and finishing in rather few pages with aplomb and clear concepts. This work is the product of deep analysis, personal experimentation and extensive bibliographical research. Anybody that wants to know about good shotgun books published in English before 1971, this is the place to look in the Notes section. This book is a must for the prospective custom shotgun owner.
