Seller's Description:
None. Good Only. Twenty-three parts of this instructional work on the sea by F Whymper. Scarce to be in the original parts as most copies of this work are already bound in volume form. Being parts 2, 11-25 (Inclusive), 27, 28-30 (Inclusive), 30, 32-35 (Inclusive). Therefore lacking several parts of this original 40 part work. Frederick Whymper was a British artist and explorer. This work on the sea discusses marine life, explorers, expeditions, and more written in a flowing prose. There are several illustrations, many being diagrams to illuminate Whymper's descriptions. In the original paper wraps. Externally, several volumes are worn. Light marks Marks to the wraps. Minor chipping to the extremities of most volumes. Small chips to the head and tail of joints to most parts. Both wraps to part 2 are detached but present and are rather soiled with chips, creases and loss. Small hole to the centre of rear wrap of part 28. Small ink signature to the top of front wrap to part 22 and to the top of front wrap to part 27. Small loss to the top right corner of part 27 possibly due to chipping. Front wrap is detached but present to part 32. Heavy spotting to the wraps of parts 32 and 33. Top right corner of front wrap to part 34 has been neatly removed by a prior owner. Small loss to the spine of 25. Loss to the head and tail of spine to part 2. Binding to part 2 has failed as has binding to part XI. Gatherings to Part 16 have loosened in places with some detaching, all are present. Binding to part 18 is loosening with some gatherings more tender than others. Some gatherings to part 19 have loosened. Textblock to parts 25 and 34 are detached from covers. Binding to part 32 is loosening. Otherwise, all other volumes are generally firmly bound. Holes to pages 29-32 to part II only marginally affecting text, just the odd word. Small loss to the head and tail of spine to most volumes. Tidemark to the recto of first plate to part 22. Top edge to final few gatherings to part 22 remains uncut. Pages are slightly age toned due to paper used. Occasional scattered spots to all parts, being heavier to the plates. Good Only.
