Seller's Description:
Very good in Good jacket. xviii, 308, [6] pages. Footnotes. Tables. DJ has some wear, tears, chips and soiling. Includes Introduction by Wayne C. Grover, Preface, Appendix, and Index. Part One covers Background: The National Archives, 1776-1949; Part Two covers The National Archives and Records Service, 1949-1968; and Part Three covers The Future of the National Archives and Records Service. There are 8 black and white illustrations following Page 138, as well as 6 tables in the text (covering the Organization Chart of the National Archives and Records Service; NARS Personnel and Operating Expenses, 1935-1968; Distribution of Work Time by Functions (Archival Work, Records Management, Record Centers, Federal Register, and Service Direction). These figures, when compared with the staff of 358 and appropriations of $1, 452, 000 in 1949, reveal a substantial increase during the past 18 years. The Increases, however, reflect largely the new or expanded responsibilities assumed since 1949--in records management, records centers, and presidential archives. The Author concludes that the creation of a new, strong, independent, and professionally administered National Archives and Records Authority--composed of the offices of the National Archives, Presidential Archives, Federal Register, Records Management, Federal Records Centers, and Archives of Machine-Readable Records, plus the National Historical Publications Commission--is the surest way of guaranteeing that the American story will be told and that it will be told accurately and objectively. Houston Gwynne Jones (1924-2018) was an American archivist and administrator in North Carolina. He served as director of the State Archives of North Carolina, and then as a curator and historian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jones was also active in the archives and history professions, serving as the 24th President of the Society of American Archivists. During World War II, Jones served as a sonar operator in the United States Navy. After the war, he completed his undergraduate degree at Appalachian State University before getting his M.A. from George Peabody College and his Ph.D. from Duke University. History of the National Archives which was established in 1934 by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
