Although over 80 years old, this well written book provides a great education to the gardener who wishes to understand how to grow better plants (much of the information can be easily used for vegetables). The early chapters on soil - preparing a bed, explaining the nutritional needs of plants, soil evaluation and improvement, composting, making your own (organic) fertilizer - are as good, if not better, than the garden books of today. Richardson Wright is a gentleman gardener meaning he has the hands on experience to teach and the education to be a delightful & intelligent read. One could enjoy reading his introduction proposing that gardening is the king of sports, and never sink a trowel in the ground. But his good humor and gentle encouragement are such that only the hardest of hearts will be uninspired to plant a garden. Two caveats: many of the cultivars suggested are no longer available and the herbicides and pesticides Mr. Wright recommends are quite dangerous have been surpassed by modern day petrochemicals.
