William Harrison Ainsworth (4 February 1805 3 January 1882) was an English historical novelist born in Manchester. His Lancashire novels cover altogether 400 years and include The Lancashire Witches, 1848, Mervyn Clitheroe, 1857, and The Leaguer of Lathom. Jack Sheppard, Guy Fawkes, 1841, Old St Paul's, 1841, Windsor Castle, 1843, and The Lancashire Witches are regarded as his most successful novels. He was very popular in his lifetime and his novels sold in large numbers, but his reputation has not lasted well. As John William Cousin argues, he depends for his effects on striking situations and powerful descriptions. Author's copyright edition. Collated, complete with all plates. The works present are as follows: Jack Sheppard, Chrichton, Lancashire Witches, Auriol, Old St Pauls, Guy Fawkes, The Spendthrift, The Star Chamber, Boscobel, Miser's Daughter, Rookwood, Flitch of Bacon, Tower of London, Mervyn Clitheroe, Windsor Castle and Ovingdean Grange. The illustrations throughout volumes are by two famous illustrators of the day George Cruikshank and Hablot K Browne (Phiz). The set is undated and therefore dated from Copac. In a lovely Bickers and Son Binding. In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart with minor rubbing to the joints and to the spines. Rubbing is heavier to the head and tail. Small loss to the head of spines to Flitch of Bacon, Crichton and The Star Chamber. Front hinge of Boscobel is slightly strained but firm. Binder's stamp indicate a Bickers and Son binding. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with some offsetting from plates. Instances of light scattered spots, tending to form at the first and last few pages. Very Good.

Spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt with five raised bands, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 64 photogravures from the etchings by George Cruikshank, 12 by Hablot K. Browne, 4 by Sir John Gilbert, 1 by Lane, 2 by Maclise, and 1 by D'Orsay. Each volume with an engraved title-page designed by Frank Brangwyn. A Fine and attractive set. William Harrison Ainsworth, English author of popular historical romances, "initially studied law but abandoned it for literature. His first success came with the novel Rookwood (1834), featuring the highwayman Dick Turpin as its main character. This book was followed by many other historical novels, 39 in all, the best known of which are The Tower of London (1840), Old St. Paul's, a Tale of the Plague and the Fire of London (1841), Windsor Castle: An Historical Romance (1843), and The Lancashire Witches (1849). Ainsworth became editor of Bentley's Miscellany in 1839, and he owned that periodical from 1854 to 1868.
