Michener and the ten contributing artists listed above. Large folio (21 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches; 547 x 395 mm). [1]-55, [1, colophon] pp. With ten original full page prints, each signed by the artist. Text is handset in Perpetua type. Printed on handmade kyokushi or Japanese Vellum. Bound at the Okamoto Bindery in original tri-tone linen, stamped in gilt on front boards and spine. Uncut. Housed in the original slipcase of unvarnished spruce or Japanese cedar. Japanese title burned into the wood on front panel of slipcase. Spine is very lightly sunned. About fine. Ten woodblock print artists and their numbered original prints also signed by Michener. Fine in very good dust jacket. woodbox slip case. This copy has been in the seller's family [the original owners] for 47 years. Signed by Michener. FIRST [and only] EDITION. 55 p. 10 tipped in original prints, each numbered 158 measures approx 25" X 18" "Limited edition of 510 copies...this is copy number 158. " Issued in a wooden case. From Michener's end notes on the selection process for these 10 artists, "On Oct. 1, 1959 a contest was announced under the sponsorship of the publisher and myself. Among the terms of the contest the following may be of interest: Ten cash prizes of $1, 278 each. Contest open to any artist closely identified with the contemporary Japanese print movement. Not more that three prints by any one artist. Each entry to be an original, unpublished print of the designated size, self-designed, self-carved, and self-printed, with no restrictions on subject matter, style, or technique. For use in this book, each prize-winning artist to supply 510 numbered copies of his winning print, printed either by himself or by an artisan under his supervision, striking off not more than ten additional copies for his own files, and then to destroy the blocks. It was also announced that the best hundred or so prints would be shown in exhibitions to be held at Takashimaya Department Store in Tokyo under the auspices of the three leading Japanese associations of print artists and at Asia House in New York under the auspices of the Japan Society of New York. " Ultimately 120 artist submitted 275 prints for judging. There were two panels of judges, one in Tokyo and the other in New York. The judges were Carl Zigrosser, Oliver Statler, Elise Grilli and Nathan Polowetsky. Each print has commentary from Michener, as well as background about the artist, comments about the print itself such as paper and ink and the artist's comments on the print. Examination of this collection can be arranged with the seller. This volume has been in the seller's family since it's original sale in 1961 or 1962.
