Some people would consider this to be one of Tennessee's worst plays simply because of the film version of it, "Boom!" starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. But, if you can read the play without thinking of the film, it is a good, but eccentric piece. Mrs. Goforth is an old, rich woman trying to write her memoirs. She is surrounded by her staff who are her sole companinons on her private island, and the occassional socialite that comes to visit and gossip. A much younger itenerant poet arrives on the island and is greeted in less than a hospitable way. One is not sure if the poet is in search of patrons or a gigilo preying on dying rich women (as the gossip has it). Mrs. Goforth and the poet engage in many deep conversations which frequently turn into arguements. In the end, Mrs. Goforth offers herself to the poet. What transpires in the bedroom may or may not confirm the gossip.
